Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise inspired her love of artistic expression and creative thinking. DuVernay worked as a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed during the day for the love of literature, art and theater. She showed DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle for social activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Although DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family, she spent every summer at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of the Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The summers she spent in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded diplomas in English and African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for the broadcast media. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked look over the rubbish at the home that belonged to a member on the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay started her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of high school. In this role, she launched her own company for public relations named The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
